Lindenwood women's hockey head coach
Scott Spencer announced his 2015 recruiting class on Monday morning. The newest Lady Lions are Jolene Debruyn, Carla Goodwin, Alexandra Larson, Tirra Lemoine, Shannon Morris-Reade, and Corbin Welsh.
Â
"I am very excited about this year's incoming class that will be joining our Lindenwood family," said Spencer. "
Cory Whitaker and our staff did a great job in identifying and making sure we brought in a quality class. This group of freshmen exude our core values of family, relentlessness, precision, pride, and sacrifice. They all come from quality programs that build great character, high competition level, and work ethic that will give us success in the conference and around the country. As a group, I believe they will have early success here at Lindenwood."
Â
Debruyn, a goalie from Grande Prairie, Alberta, previously played at St. Francis Xavier High School. She had a 0.92 save percentage or better all four years in high school, and had a GAA below 2.00 her sophomore and junior seasons. She was also a member of the u-18 team Alberta squad and participated in the 2015 Canada Winter Games.
Â
"Jolene is a very calm, technical goalie that has big save capabilities," said Spencer. "She's battle tested with good size."
Â
Goodwin, a forward from Fort St. James, British Columbia, comes to Lindenwood after playing for Pursuit of Excellence for the past three years. She had 17 goals and 31 assists at Pursuit of Excellence and helped her team finish third or better each year at the World Sports School Challenge. In 2011-12, she played for the Prince George Cougars and helped the team win the Bantam Provincials.
Â
"Carla is responsible two-way forward that just does everything well," said Spencer. "She blocks shots, gets every puck out, and is relentless on the forecheck and backcheck."
Â
Larson, a defenseman from West Vancouver, British Columbia, also comes from Pursuit of Excellence. She was a teammate of Goodwin's for the last three World Sports School Challenge teams. Â In 2015, she was the MVP of that event. During her senior season, she had one goal and nine assists.
Â
"Ally is a smooth skating defenseman that can make a play and defend with the best players in the country," said Spencer. "Her skating allows her to have an impact on the offensive side of the puck as well."
Â
Lemoine, a forward from St. Lazare, Manitoba, is a third recruit from Pursuit of Excellence. She helped her team reach the finals at the World Sport School Challenge the last two years, including winning the event in 2015. She also earned a silver medal in 2013 at the under-18 nationals with Team Manitoba. In her two years at Pursuit of Excellence, she had six goals and 12 assists.
Â
"Tirra is strong, powerful skater that is good along the wall and will block shots," said Spencer. "She has the ability to play in many situations for us."
Â
Morris-Reade, a forward from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, was previously a member of West Coast Avalanche. She has scored 46 goals and recorded 30 assists the last two years. She was a member of team British Columbia at the 2014 and 2015 Canada Winter Games. She also participated in the 2013 Team British Columbia nationals, and the 2013 and 2014 Esso Cup Nationals.
Â
"Shannon brings size and tenacity that will be hard to match anywhere in the country," said Spencer. "She has good touch around the net and is willing to go to the dirty areas to have success."
Â
Welsh, a forward from Grande Prairie, Alberta, is a fourth member from Spencer's former program at Pursuit of Excellence. She helped her Pursuit of Excellence squad win one silver and one bronze at the World Sport School Challenge. She also won two silver medals at the Shaftesbury's Tournament. In her final two seasons, she recorded 13 goals and 19 assists.
Â
"Corbin is great two-way hockey player," said Spencer. "She has good size, skates well, and is extremely effective in the face-off circles."
Â
This year's recruiting class is the first for Spencer who was hired last summer. Spencer led Lindenwood to its best season in program history in his first year as the head coach.
