Lindenwood Gymnast Rachel Zabawa Wins USAG Nationals On Beam

The Lindenwood women's gymnastics team brought home its first national champion on Sunday afternoon after freshman Rachel Zabawa scored a 9.875 on the beam. Zabawa and Alicia Floyd both competed in the finals on Sunday.

Zabawa's 9.875 on the beam tied Texas Woman's Bethany Larimer for first place as Co-USAG National Champions. The two gymnasts beat out Sasha Tsikhanovich of Bridgeport who scored a 9.850 on the event.  Along with the beam, Zabawa qualified for Sunday on the vault. Her combined score of 9.7875 put her in sole possession of fourth place overall.

After a 9.850 on the beam to qualify for the finals, Floyd backed that score up with a 9.750 to finish in a tie for seventh place overall in the event.

Both Zabawa and Floyd earned USAG First-Team All-American status on the beam as well as Zabawa earning that honor on the vault. Courtney Heise was named USAG Second-Team All-American on both the bars and the floor and Zabawa earned that same honor on the floor exercise. Coach Annie Alameda was also recognized as the USAG Nationals Assistant Coach of the Year.

This meet concluded the inaugural season for the Lindenwood gymnastics team. In its first season, the Lady Lions picked up three wins including two against USAG Nationals and MIC Championships host school Centenary.
