Women's Hockey Earns First Series Sweep Of The Season

The Lindenwood women's ice hockey team earned its first series sweep over a NCAA Division I opponent on Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Sacred Heart.

The turning point of the game came early in the second period. Lindenwood led 2-1 after the first period but the Pioneers opened the second on a power play. Just 30 seconds into the period, Alison Wickenheiser scored a shorthanded goal to put Lindenwood up 3-1. The two teams traded goals later in the second period and Lindenwood iced the victory with a third-period goal.

Lindenwood outshot Sacred Heart 43-28 and it won 43-of-60 faceoffs. The Lady Lions did not score on its lone power-play chance, and Sacred Heart was just one-of-six with a man advantage.

Wickenheiser had her second hat trick of the season with three goals and she assisted on another score. Brett Lobreau and Kendra Broad had the other two goals. Alyssa West had two assists, and Megan Cox, Jordyn Constance, and Allysson Arcibal all had one assist apiece.

Briar Bache earned her second straight win in goal. She made 26 saves in the contest, including 10 in the final period.

Wickenheiser finished with a +4 plus-minus, and Arcibal was +3. Cox, Sydney Gorzitza, Katie Erickson, West, and Lobreau were a +2. On faceoffs, West, Caitlyn Post, and Kelsey Talbot all won the majority of the faceoffs they took.

Lindenwood improves to 6-21-0 on the season, and it has won four straight games. The Lady Lions will have a three-game exhibition series with Robert Morris (Ill.) starting next Friday night.
