Lindenwood Table Tennis earned several titles as they hosted the September Open at the Hyland Arena September 24-25, an event that featured almost 100 players from eight different states.
Competition on Saturday included USA Table Tennis rated events from the Under-1000 to Open Singles events. In the Open Singles division, Fernando Yamazato knocked off fellow teammate and number one seeded Paulo Rocha in three straight games (11-8, 11-6, 11-9). Yamazato had beaten another Lion Venkat Ramesh in the semifinals while Rocha defeated Jose Barbosa from Texas Wesleyan University (TWU) in the other semifinal.
The Under-2350 division featured another all Lindenwood final as Kris Frank held off Andre Irigoyen (11-6, 16-14, 11-9). Frank advanced by knocking off fellow Lion Fred Cantarelli in the semifinals while Irigoyen outlasted Lindenwood's Karin Fukushima in four games in the other semifinal.
In yet another all Lindenwood final, Everton Wilson II topped Lady Lion Leine Agata in the Under-2150 division (11-9, 5-11, 11-9, 11-8). Ryan Driskill won the Under-1900 division going undefeated for the Lions.
Sunday's competition featured round robin play broken into nine player groups. In the top Class A division, Jose Barbosa from TWU emerged as the champion with Lindenwood's Yamazato and Ramesh finishing in second and third respectively. In the Class B Division, the Lions swept the top three positions with Yuvraaj Dookram taking first, Michelle John second and Everton Wilson finishing third.
Lindenwood next competes at the 26th Annual Bernard Hock Open in New Albany, Indiana October 8-9.
