Lions Table Tennis picked up three titles at the Badger Open in Waukesha, Wisconsin September 16-18.
Lindenwood's 2010 and 2011 Mixed Doubles National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) runner-ups Fernando Yamazato and Karin Fukushima continued their successful partnership as they dominated the Open Doubles competition by taking the title 4-0 over Xun Zeng and Nathan Hsu (11-9, 11-6, 12-10, 11-8). On the way to the championship match, they defeated Barney Reed and Michael Hyatt in the semifinals (5-11, 11-6, 11-9, 7-11, 17-15, 11-9).
In the other semifinal, Lindenwood freshman Venkat Ramesh and Paulo Rocha came just short of the finals, losing a close match at deuce to Zeng and Hsu in the seventh game (11-5, 9-11, 6-11, 7-11, 11-5, 11-6, 10-12).
It was an all Lindenwood final in the Women's Singles competition as Karin Fukushima took down Michelle John in three straight games (11-5, 11-5, 11-5). Fukushima advanced to the finals by defeating fellow teammate Leine Agata (5-11, 11-2, 11-8, 11-5). John advanced to the semi-finals by also defeating Agata in round-robin play (11-8, 13-11, 9-11, 4-11, 11-6).
In the Under-2300 event, third seeded Lion Andre Irigoyen went undefeated to capture the title, knocking off Eric Finkelstein from Princeton (11-8, 9-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-7) in the finals. Finkelstein had earlier defeated Lindenwood's Fred Cantarelli to advance through the semifinals (11-9, 3-11, 9-11, 9-11). Cantarelli was the top seed entering match play.
In the Hardbat competition, Irigoyen settled for second place after falling to previous U.S. Men's National Singles Champion Eric Owens (18-21, 15-21). Lindenwood's Venkat Ramesh lost to Owens in the semifinals, but was able to push the match to three games.
The Open Singles competition was dominated by Canadian Zhen Wang who recently won the prestigious Los Angeles Open earlier in the month. The Lions advanced three players to the quarterfinals.
The Badger Open attracted almost 200 competitors from across the country, including 15 from Lindenwood.
The Lions next host the September Open at the Hyland Arena September 24th and 25th. Admission is free to the event that begins at 9:00 a.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
