The Lindenwood men's golf team won the 2011 HAAC Championship on Tuesday in Hamilton, Ill. The title was the 13th championship for the program in 15 years in the conference. Freshman
Greg MacAulay won medalist honors at the competition.
The Lions had a narrow nine-shot lead after the first round but pulled away in the final 36 holes. They had a comfortable 28-shot lead after the second round and finished with a 51 stroke victory. Lindenwood had rounds of 317, 300, and 295 for a total of 912. Central Methodist was runner-up with a score of 963.
While the team race was decided early, the individual race went down to the wire. MacAulay trailed the round two leader by three shots entering the final round, but he shot the best round of the tournament in the third round to take the title. He carded a one-under 70 in that third round and finished with a 11-over 224, which won the tournament by two shots.
Teammate
Paul Colditz was runner-up after finishing with a 226. He opened with a 79 and finished with rounds of 73 and 74.
The large team victory happened because of the strength of the team's final three golfers. All three had two rounds count in the team score, and they all finished in the top 10. Erik Isacsson came in fourth-place overall with a 232. His best round came in round two with a 74.
Oscar Isacsson and
Richard Docherty both tied for seventh with a 237.
Oscar Isacsson's best round was a 78 in round one, the best team score for those 18 holes.
Richard Docherty's best day came during the third round when he finished the tournament with a 74.
All five Lindenwood golfers were named to the all-tournament team for finishing among the top eight.
Oscar Isacsson was named the HAAC Golfer of the Year for his performance throughout the entire 2010-11 season.
With the victory, Lindenwood earns a spot in the NAIA National Championship, which begins on May 24 in Silvis, Ill.
