The Lindenwood table tennis competed in the National Table Tennis Championships this past weekend. Bot the men and the women's teams finished in second place behind Texas Wesleyan.
In the preliminary round robin play, the men's team defeated Ohio State, Columbia University, and the University of Minnesota in order to advance into the main draw of 12 teams. In the quarterfinals, the Lions defeated USC 3-0. In the semifinals, they defeated Governor's State University by the same score. However, the run stoppped short of the title when they lost to eight-time defending national champion, Texas Wesleyan University.
In the women's preliminary rounds, the Lady Lions defeated Duke University 3-0 in the quarterfinals and Columbia University in the semifinals 3-2. This set up a re-match between Lindenwood and Texas Wesleyan women for the national title. Last year, the Lady Lions upset the three-time defending champions, but this year they lost 3-1.
Lindenwood's only national title in 2011 was claimed in the women's doubles where
Karin Fukushima and
Leine Agata upset the No. 1 seeded team from Texas Wesleyan 11-5, 12-10, 3-11, 12-10. In the mixed doubles event Fukushima would return to the finals with partner,
Fernando Yamazato. Unfortunately, they ran into the 2010 National Mixed Doubles champions from Texas Wesleyan, Mark and Sara Hazinski. The Hazinskis proved too much for the reigning champs and eventually lost by the scores of 11-6, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9.
