The Lindenwood men's volleyball team had its season come to an end on Friday night when it fell to St. Ambrose in the semifinals of the NAIA Men's Volleyball National Invitational Tournament in Davenport, Iowa. The Lions fought the Bees tough the whole way, losing by two points in the fifth set. St. Ambrose won with scores of 25-22, 23-25, 25-19, 19-25, 15-13.
The first set was very close and the Lions were up 20-19 late in the game. The Bees then proceeded to win five straight points and would hang on for a three-point victory and put Lindenwood in a 1-0 hole.
Game two was tight as well, but the Lions never trailed during the entire set. With the game tied at 19-19, Lindenwood went on an important four-point run to establish control and held-off the Bees to tie the match at 1-1.
St. Ambrose took a 2-1 lead after the third game, as it managed to separate itself from the Lions, going on a 8-1 stretch midway through the set. Lindenwood attempted a comeback but came up short, falling by six points.
In game three, the Lions went on an 8-2 run to jump out to a comfortable lead, and ended up winning the set by six points.
The final set was back-and-forth, just like the entire match, and the teams were knotted up at 10-10. After the Bees built a 14-12 lead, Lindenwood staved off one match point, but couldn't do it twice, falling 15-13.
The Lions were led offensively by
Bradley Johnston and
Mike Warren, who both had 13 kills.
Mike Larson assisted on 27 points, and
Carson Grissinger added 23. On defense,
Mike Emerick had a team-high 11 digs for Lindenwood, and
Luke Knowlson led with eight total blocks.
Lindenwood finished the season with a 24-10 overall record, after going 10-2 in conference play.
