Table Tennis Places High at International Event

Lindenwood table tennis traveled to Baltimore, Maryland for the 2011 JOOLA Team Championships November 25-27 and came away with a 15th place finish out of 196 teams at the international event that attracted competition from China, Canada and Mexico along with the United States.

The Lions entered two teams in the event, which featured a best-of-nine format with three players from each team competing in round-robin singles matches.  The first Lindenwood team consisted of Fernando Yamazato, Venkat Ramesh, Karin Fukushima and Fred Cantarelli.  They began the preliminary round on Friday as the second seed in their bracket.  They easily handled the third and fourth seeds, winning each match 5-0 and upset the top seed with a 5-2 victory.  By going undefeated in their division, they advanced to the highest flight of competition for the rest of the weekend representing the top 20 teams.

Lindenwood's second team consisted of Kris Frank, Yuvraaj Dookram, and Everton Wilson II.  They entered preliminary competition as the fourth seed in their bracket.  After falling to the fifth seeded team 5-0, they rebounded against the six seed with a 5-3 win, but then lost to the three seed 5-2 and were shut out by the number two seed 5-0.  The 1-3 record advanced them to the fifth flight of competition for the rest of the tournament.

The first team for the Lions entered competition on Saturday as the lowest seed in their group of five.  Lindenwood defeated the number four seed, but then lost each match to the three highest seeds, knocking them into the consolation bracket for play on Sunday.  A win and a loss earned them the 15th place finish overall at the championships.

The second Lindenwood team was seeded second in a bracket of eight teams in the fifth division.  They went undefeated to advance to the finals match, but fell to a junior co-ed team from British Columbia, Canada to end their run.

Lindenwood table tennis gets a couple months off before returning to competition in early February as they host the Spring National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) Lower Midwest Division competition February 5, 2012.  For the first time in NCTTA history, a singles competition will be added to the team competition. If Lindenwood wins the Division Title, then they will get an automatic bid to the NCTTA Regional Teams competition at Governor's State University February 25-26, 2012.
