Lions Capture Regular Season Crown With Sweep of Ohio

The Lindenwood men's ice hockey team officially clinched the top spot in the CSCHL regular season standings after finishing the sweep of Ohio University with a 4-3 victory on Saturday night.

The Lions got off on the right foot as they scored the only goal registered in the first period. Eric Combs was the scorer, putting away the first of his two goals on the night.

The second period began with Cory Spradling netting a power-play goal. Ohio came back with two consecutive goals to tie the game up. But Combs scored his second near the end of the period to put Lindenwood up by one.

After the second intermission, Steve Kowalczyk gave the Lions a two-goal cushion, making the score 4-2. With a minute left in regulation, Ohio went on the power-play and pulled its goalie to obtain a two-man advantage, and managed to pull within one goal. But Lindenwood would hang-on to take the series sweep and the CSCHL regular season title.

Robi Cavallari stopped 27 shots to earn this crucial victory, which is his 19th on the season.

On Friday night, Lindenwood defeated Ohio by a final score of 5-1.

The game began with Adam Krefski pushing his goal-scoring streak to three games with a power-play goal. Less than a minute later, Zach Glazer put the Lions up by two. Going into the first intermission, Lindenwood would stretch that lead to three goals after Combs got on the scoring sheet.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second period. But Tyler Bowman put the Lions up 4-0 only a minute into the final period. Ohio was able to respond with a power-play goal midway through the period. Then Alex Roth iced the game with another goal for the Lions with the man advantage.

In net for Lindenwood, Cavallari received the win, saving 29 shots. Colin Long was able to contribute two assists.

The Lions will return home next weekend to take on Indiana University with only four games left in the regular season.
