Lindenwood University announced today that
Derek Schaub will take over as the men's lacrosse head coach, returning to a program that he helped start in 2003.
Schaub was the head coach of the first Lindenwood men's lacrosse team in 2003. He led the Lions to an 8-0 conference record and a first-place finish in the GRLC Division B Tournament. In the championship game of that conference tournament, the Lions defeated Kansas State by a pair of goals, with the winning score coming with just 30 seconds left in the game. Among the players Schaub coached that year was
Brian Smith who was named MVP of the GRLC Tournament.
Schaub has been a coach at Lindenwood since 2001-02, when he became the head coach of the LU roller hockey program. He had a 40-1-0 overall record in roller hockey and led Lindenwood to the 2002 and 2003 national championships. Those titles were the foundation for one of the school's most dominating programs—roller hockey now has won eight of its last nine national tournaments.
After starting men's lacrosse in 2003, Schaub began another program the next year when he became the head coach of the Lindenwood men's ice hockey team. Over the last seven years, the Lions have gone 217-57-3 under Schaub. The program has appeared in the last three national championship games and won back-to-back titles in 2009 and 2010.
“I will bring the same philosophy to lacrosse that has helped build the hockey program into one of the top ACHA programs in the nation,” said Schaub.
After Schaub's initial success in the 2003, the men's lacrosse team has gone 103-39 over the last seven years. The Lions have won five conference tournaments and advanced to the national tournament five times. A new men's hockey coach will be named in the near future.
Schaub replaces Troy Hood, who resigned to pursue other interests.
