The Lindenwood cycling team competed at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships this past weekend in Madison, Wis.
The team, consisting of five riders, competed in the road race and the criterium against other riders from NAIA and NCAA schools. The Lions finished 16th out of 51 programs.
Lindenwood experienced some bad luck in the 76 mile road race. Riders Owen Belton, Matt Brandt, and Nicholas Chevalley all had to abandon the race due to mechanical issues. However,
that luck would change.
The Lions emerged as one of the Midwest Conference's top criterium teams during the spring schedule, and that held to form at nationals. The field of 125 riders maintained a blistering pace for the hour long race. In a bunch sprint in the closing moments, Brandt crossed the finish line in third place, and Tim Norris was 18th. Belton finished in the middle of the pack after running a strong race.
Lindenwood finishes with the best season in program history. The Lions finished fourth in the Midwest Conference, and will return the bulk of the team for next year.
