The Lindenwood wrestling team placed 11 of its 12 wrestlers at the 2010 NAIA East National Qualifier, but that was not enough for a team championship as the Lions were runner-up at the competition.
Both the Lions and Notre Dame placed 11, but the Falcons placed more wrestlers at the top of the brackets, giving them a 173.5-134.5 advantage over Lindenwood. Notre Dame won five weight classes, placed one other in the finals, and had a total of nine finishes in the top three. Lindenwood won just one bracket, had two runner-up finishes and two more finish third. McKendree was third in the ten-team event with 117.0 points.
Chris Chionuma won the team's lone individual championship by taking the 165 pound weight class. He advanced to the semifinals with a technical fall and pin against unseeded wrestlers. He then earned two decision victories over McKendree grapplers to win the weight class, including a 3-2 victory over Aaron Winning in the finals.
Jake Johnson and
Tyler Porras were both runner-up in their respective weight classes. Johnson went 3-1 in 157 pounds, including two pins. His lone loss was by a narrow 5-3 decision. Porras won two decision victories in the heavyweight class before suffering a pin in the finals.
Third-place finishes went to
Willie Wiggins at heavyweight and
Spencer Daniels at 197 pounds. Wiggins recorded two pins and had four victories.
Fourth-place showings came from
Wilson Metellus at 141 pounds,
Sam Schmitz at 149 pounds, and Drae Cox at 174 pounds.
Brian Oechsner at 157 pounds and Robbie Hicklin at 174 pounds both came in fifth, and
Elliot Martin at 133 pounds finished sixth.
The last time Lindenwood finished second at the NAIA qualifier was two years ago and it followed that up with a first-place finish at the NAIA National Championship. It will look to repeat that feat on March 4-6 at this year's national event.
