The Lindenwood Table Tennis men's doubles team was finally stopped in the finals of the Badger Open by the score of 4-11, 7-11, 7-11, 6-11, but not before the freshman duo of Andre Irigoyen and Fred Cantarelli upset multi-national U.S. Doubles Champion Dan Seemiller Sr. and his son in the semifinals. It was a best of seven match that went the distance. The Seemillers won the first two games 11-9 and 11-3 before Lindenwood's Brazilian duo took the third game 11-4. Seemillers moved ahead in the match three games to one by winning the fourth game 11-4. Lindenwood stepped it up a notch taking the fifth game 11-5. Lindenwood tied the match at three games each by winning the sixth game at deuce, 14-12. The seventh, and final game, went down to the wire. Seemillers called timeout while leading 8-7, but it would be Lindenwood who would be victorious winning the last game at deuce 12-10.
In the women's singles, freshman standout Michelle John took second place going 3-1 overall in her round robin. Her only loss came at the hands of undefeated Tao Li from Virginia by the score of 5-11, 6-11, and 9-11.
Ryan Driskill took matters into his own hands as he competed in the U-1800 singles event. The junior from Taylorville, Illinois took no prisoners as he beat every competitor to claim the title as this year's champion. He won his final match 3 games to 1.
The Lions hope to return to this site on April 9-11 to compete in both Co-Ed and Women's National Collegiate Team Championships. Lindenwood will be looking to improve upon their 2008-2009 5th place Co-Ed Team finish.
Next up for the team will be the 24th Annual Bernard Hock Open in New Albany, Indiana October 10-11.
