For the first time this year the Lindenwood table tennis team would compete at home at the 2009 Lindenwood October Open. The tournament turned out to be very successful for the Lions.
In the Open Singles division, Lindenwood's Andre Irigoyen once again made the strongest showing for the team by reaching the finals. In the finals he played against the 2008 National Collegiate Singles champion from Emporia State University, Alfred Najem. While the match was close, Irigoyen would fall to the champion in four games 11-9, 10-12, 11-5, 11-4.
In the U-2350 division, Lindenwood would win their first title when Frederico Cantarelli fought hard to take the title in five games. He defeated Vladimir Altman from Overland Park, Kansas in the finals 11-8, 15-17, 13-11, 3-11, 14-12. Michelle John also had a strong showing reaching the semifinals.
In the U-2150 division, Guilherme Dalcin pulled a big upset beating Rick Seiler of St. Louis in the finals 6-11, 11-8, 11-5, 3-11, 11-9.
Next up for the Lions will be the Midwest National Collegiate Table Tennis Association Teams competition held at Lindenwood on Sunday, November 8th.
