WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY DEFEATS ROBERT MORRIS FOR ACHA TITLE

Mar. 9, 2008- The Lindenwood women’s ice hockey program won the second national championship in its five-year history on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Robert Morris in the ACHA Division I Championship game.

The two teams, who were meeting in the national title contest for the third straight year, played a scoreless first period before Lindenwood’s Kat Hannah, the program’s all-time leader in points, scored her final collegiate goal midway through the second period. Hannah collected an Ashley Boye pass from the right of the net and put it past the Lady Eagles’ goalie to put the Lady Lions up 1-0. Nathalie Larsen also received an assist on the goal.

Late in the second, Robert Morris went on a 5-on-3 power play and took advantage by tying the score with just 27 seconds remaining in the period.

The Lady Lions had a 5-on-3 power play of their own early in the third period but Robert Morris was able to kill it off. The two defenses continued to dominate the period until Lindenwood went on the power play again with less than six minutes remaining. Late in the power play, Gillian Couture shot a one-timer from the near circle and found a hole in the top part of the goal to put Lindenwood up 2-1 with 3:44 remaining. Larsen and Boye were again credited with assists on the scoring play.

Robert Morris had one more opportunity to tie the game, going on a power play shortly after the Lady Lions went ahead. Lindenwood didn’t allow the Lady Eagles a scoring chance though and Couture’s goal stood up as the game winner.

Becca Bernet picked up the win in goal after making 24 saves. She was the leader of a Lindenwood defense that allowed just six goals during five games at the ACHA Tournament.

Lindenwood’s Boye was named tournament MVP after scoring seven goals throughout the ACHA Tournament, as well as having two assists during the title game.

The Lady Lions now have a 2-1 edge over Robert Morris during national championship games. Lindenwood won the 2006 title by a 3-2 overtime score. Last year, Robert Morris won the championship with a 4-1 victory.

Lindenwood concludes its 2007-08 season with a 36-3 overall record and a 31-2 mark against ACHA competition. The 36 wins shatters the previous school record of 29 wins in a season, which was set during the team’s run to the 2006 national championship.
