Women's Ice Hockey Sweeps Three Games Against NCAA Foes

Jan. 6, 2008- The Lindenwood women’s ice hockey team swept three games over the weekend against NCAA Division III competition, and improved to 5-1 on the year against NCAA opponents.

On Friday night, the Lady Lions got 2008 off to a good start with a 6-1 victory over Concordia (Minn.). The team was outshot 29-26 in the game but Becca Bernet made 28 saves as she picked up the win in goal.

Offensively, Lindenwood scored twice in the first five minutes of the game to take control of the contest early on. Mandy Dion had the first goal and Ashley Boye added a power play goal shortly after. Boye added a second goal in the second period to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.

In the third quarter, Melissa McGhee opened up the scoring to put Lindenwood up 4-0, before Concordia scored midway through to end the shutout. The Lady Lions then proceeded to score twice more late, as Kat Hannah and Nathalie Larsen both scored off of assists from Boye.

Boye, Shannon Murphy and Larsen all had a +4 on the night and the trio combined for four goals and four assists.

Saturday, Lindenwood opened up its two-game series versus Saint Benedict by claiming a 4-1 win.

The Blazers led 1-0 after one period, but the Lady Lions took over the game in the second period, outshooting Saint Benedict 18-7 in that period and scoring twice. Melanie Keith scored the first goal and Dion added the second with a power play score.

In the third period, McGhee and Hannah both scored, and Lindenwood continued to keep the Blazers off the scoreboard.

Bernet picked up another victory with 13 saves on the night.

In the weekend finale, Bernet finished off a great weekend with a shutout victory in a 3-0 Lindenwood win. She made 30 saves in the game, including 14 in the final period.

Lindenwood's scored twice in the second period and once more in the third. The goals came from Hannah, Larsen and Keith.

The Lady Lions improved to 18-2 on the season. The team will travel to Michigan next weekend for a series as it resumes ACHA play.
