The No. 5 Lindenwood women's lacrosse team suffered a 14-13 setback against No. 8 Michigan on Friday afternoon at the WCLA National Championship Tournament. The Wolverines scored four unanswered goals in the second half to just get past the Lady Lions.
The back-and-forth contest had seven ties during the competitive game. Lindenwood jumped out to an early 3-1 lead and it never trailed again, until Michigan scored with just 33 seconds remaining before halftime. That goal, one of two for Michigan in a 1:04 span, gave the Wolverines an 8-7 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Lindenwood retook the lead at both 10-9 and 11-10. Michigan took the lead though with its four straight goals and it then hung on late to preserve the lead. Lindenwood made the score 14-12 on a
Lexi Crusha goal. With 30 seconds remaining,
Justiene Groothuis pulled Lindenwood within one, but the Lady Lions couldn't score the equalizer.
Crusha finished the contest with three goals and four assists. Other offensive leaders included
Kara Cashen with four goals and
Kathryn St. George with three. Groothuis had two goals and one assist,
Eleni Papadakos had one goal, and
Kelsey Anderson had one assist.
Brittany Frankenfeld made 12 saves in goal and Cashen had a team-high three groundballs.
Lindenwood falls to 14-6 on the season. The Lady Lions will play No. 11 Pittsburgh on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. in the 11th-place game at the national tournament.
