Wrestling Has Strong Showing At Final Regular Season Tournament

The No. 4 Lindenwood wrestling team competed in its final regular season open tournament on Saturday at the Missouri Valley Open. Twelve different Lions placed including two taking home championships.

Brian Oechsner and Chris Chionuma led the way by winning the 157 pound and 165 pound weight classes, respectively. Oechsner went 5-0 to win his bracket, with one major decision victory and a 8-3 decision win in the finals. Chionuma won four matches, with one fall, one major decision and a 10-8 decision victory in the championship match.

Sam Schmitz at 149 pounds and Spencer Daniels at 197 pounds also made the finals, but fell one match short of a title. Schmitz won four straight decisions before losing a 3-0 decision in the championship bout. Daniels picked up one fall during his three victories at the competition.

Four Lions placed third at the Open in Andrew MacArthur (125), Wilson Metellus (141), Robbie Hicklin(174), and Tyler Porras (285). Vince Hannon (149) and John Murray (165) each finished fourth. Sixth-place showings went to Nick Savage (149) and Willie Wiggins (285).

Lindenwood will host Truman in a dual this Wednesday evening in the team’s final regular season competition.

Mandy Dion
Women's Ice Hockey
Mandy Dion helped the Lady Lions ice hockey team win its third straight national championship and was named MVP of the tournament. She scored 11 goals in five games at the national event and had three hat tricks.
Cory Spradling
Men's Ice Hockey
Cory Spradling was named the tournament MVP for the Lindenwood men's ice hockey as it won its second straight national title. Spradling scored the game-winning goal in a 2-0 victory over Iowa State in the championshp game. He also scored twice in a 4-0 semifinal victory over Central Oklahoma.
